This post (as with many of my others) is long overdue.

I think I inherited my tardiness from my dad.. when I was a kid we’d be ready to go to church on Sunday and then he’d decide he wanted to come along, but first he had to wash his hair. I remember sitting in the car looking up and seeing the bathroom light on and him rubbing his hair with a towel while we were waiting. Without fail we’d come into the service during the music or even as the sermon was just starting. I don’t think I”m always that late, but I seem to always running about 5 minutes behind everyone else.

Anyhow, there is a bit of news in my life.

1. My sister is having a baby!!! I’m so excited for them. 😀  She’s due on the first of October, and I’m going to make a little layette for the new niece/nephew. Just a small blanket, a hat, some booties and a sweater if I have time. I also have a million projects in my head that I’m going to make for them! ooo a whole life of cute projects to make for a little youngster! Valerie and Mat are going to be amazing parents.

2. The place I work had a fire a few months ago. The entire thing is quite ridiculous..  the building manager or someone hired a person to get rid of weeds around the building. This person decided TORCHING THEM would be a good idea. There are lots of problems with his notion that it would be a good thing to do: fire is not the answer to weeds (have you seen how much of those types of plants come up after a forest fire has gone through? weeds thrive after a fire.); he was walking around with a propane tank and a hose with fire coming out of it (wtf is wrong with him?); and WHY WOULD YOU PUT FIRE AROUND AN OLD BUILDING?!?! the tiles around the front of the shop only have wood behind them, and who knows how old or dry or anything that wood is…

There are no words for this stupidity. He was totally irresponsible, he could have endangered lives (thankfully the fire was after store hours), he ruined merchandise that the store didn’t even own (we are a consignment shop), he has cost the business an incredible amount of money (even with insurance coverage), and he has put the employees out of work. WTF.  I could go on and on, but I don’t think people want to read this.

3. I started using proactive. This is a good thing and a bad thing… the good is that it’s made my face look and feel a lot better and I have regained quite a bit of confidence. the bad is that I am not a fan of putting chemicals like that on/in my body (with the exception of hair bleach so I can do turquoise or something fancy).

ignore the funky look on my face, it was intensely bright out.. the whole point is that my face was so irritated and red and full of acne.

not taking into account the makeup which is quite sheer on my general face area, you should be able to see the improvement. I still have some scarring, but that’s fading fairly quickly.

I have been trying really hard to clean up my beauty routine, I have a bunch of shampoo to use up, but after it’s finished I’m going to start cleaning my hair in a way that doesn’t strip the natural oils so efficiently. I hate throwing out things so I tend to try to use things up before I switch to a cleaner alternative. I have been using mineral and natural makeup except for a couple colors of eyeshadow that I’m just looking for a good alternative to.

I didn’t like the moisturizer I got with the Proactiv set (the green tea moisturizer). It just didn’t hydrate as well as I like, I have extremely dry skin. I’ve taken to using a teensy dab of coconut or castor oil and just warming it up and working it into my skin. The castor oil especially is really calming for my irritable skin and I don’t have to reapply moisture through the day. With conventional moisturizing creams I would likely have to apply it 2 or 3 times to get rid of the dryness.

I’m planning on blending up a little castor oil, jojoba oil and coconut oil for a blend for my skin that is a little bit lighter than just castor oil alone. The oils really help restore the luster(?) to my skin after bombarding it with the Proactiv.

In the next couple days, I have a couple yarn projects to post on here for y’alls viewing pleasure.

Does anyone else have natural beauty or other secrets? I love to hear about cool ways to use items in the cupboard or schmancy ingredients.

The last week has had many ups and downs. The downs were mostly due to a stress aggravated pms attack 😦

I did get the second job I had the interview for, which I start next month after the wedding. I found out after I had started training for the first one, so that’s a little crazy. The second one is much closer, the same wage and a few more hours a week than the one I’m training for right now. The one I’ve started is about half an hour away, which is mostly walking.. so it’s not as convenient. I feel bad that they’ve already started training and I’m pretty sure that I’m already going to quit. I’m pretty much 95% positive that the schedules aren’t going to work out between them, if I wanted to keep both of them. I’m glad I am working at least a couple weeks though, because the money is good to have, and it’s going to help me gear up for the new job.

On to more crafty news:

I bought this gorgeous yarn yesterday at Shan’s Needleworks which is just a few blocks from me. I’ve only gone in a couple times, but I really enjoy seeing what’s in there, and talking about techniques and patterns with the lady who runs it.

drool worthy, am I right?

This is destined to be an entrelac tunisian cowl. I have shivers when I think about it, no foolin’.

Also!!! I have finished myself a pair of slippers from scratch (pattern and all, spinning yarn not included) before 9:45 this morning. Do you remember this yarn?

I rolled it into a center pull ball, which by the way is my new favorite way to do balls of yarn. I was intending to make these Bella Slippers but because of the bulk of my yarn I think, it was going to be way too big. So I ripped it all back, and  using almost the same first 2 rows, I just improvised myself some cute slippers.  They would be easy to convert to a mary jane/ballet slipper look, but I like the simplicity of no fancy closures for a  first slipper. Especially because I was writing out the pattern as I was making it up so that both feet could be the same.

the first prototype!

I’m now starting to brainstorm ideas for embellishment.. perhaps a cute applique or buttons up the side. If people (mostly Erika 😛 ) are interested, I can post the pattern I wrote out. I’d really like it if someone tested it to see how it works out. I did the second slipper from the pattern I wrote for my prototype, but I don’t know how someone else will read it. I used maybe half a skein of chunky/bulky yarn and a 4.5 mm hook.

kitty, thor cup, and my new slippers! life doesn't get much better than this.. all I need is my Man sitting right next to me and I'm set

Fall is on its way!! It’s starting to get chillier during the nights.. So I think that the cowl I have planned is going to be just in time!

I had a meeting with the Marriage Commissioner yesterday too! She’s the nicest, jolly, cute lady ever. It’s all super set for October 1st at 2pm!! It’s hard to believe it’s only a few weeks away. Will is taking care of all the food, and I’m going to get some inexpensive decorations and pretty our place up!! We have about 20 – 25 people coming. It’s going to be in our apartment.. I hope we have enough room XD but I have no money for a venue, so it’ll have to do. I haven’t seen my father’s side of the family for 2 or 3 years.. so I’m really happy they’ll be coming! I was really hoping that my grandma would be able to make it, and it’s easier for her since we’ve moved and it’s a lot closer.

Labor vs. Labour

I guess since I’m in Canada I should be using labour, not labor. I like the simplicity of not adding a ‘u’ to words for no reason. Although if I feel hoity toity then I’ll spell shit however I want to.

In life events:

Will and I have a friend staying over for about a week, this last weekend (labor day weekend) we went to Japadog!! it was delicious! If anyone gets the chance, you have to go there.

We also went to Burger Heaven again. I had the cod burger, and it was scrumptious! woohoo for good food!

In more life events:

I have the marriage commissioner for Oct. 1st.

I got a job offer and an awesome job interview today, so I find out tomorrow if I get the second one. I have a super feeling about the interview, so I’m crossing my fingers that I get it. It’s just down the street from me, whereas the one I got an offer on is a few train stops over and a 20 min. walk after that. Which means I’ll be paying for a monthly pass, which means less money I could use for more useful things.

I need to figure out how to get my wedding dress shortened (cause I’m not so tall) for cheap. So if anyone can suggest anything, that would be fantastic! I’m thinking I might try hand sewing, but that means I need help pinning the hem to the length I need it, and that’s hard. I don’t really want to feel ridiculous on my wedding day with a way too long dress so I feel frumpy. that’s the day no one ever wants to feel frumpy.

Cheese Treats! and other things

These are the most delicious cookies ever. Surprising, because they are by no means a sweet dessert cookie, but they have a texture and satisfaction to die for. it’s definitely one of my family’s favorites.. And I promised Erika that I’d post the recipe, so here it is, however belated it may be.

1/2 lb grated sharp cheddar
1/2 lb softened butter
2 cups flour
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
2 1/2 cups rice krispies
Mix together, form balls, flatten with fork (you can use the fork marks as a decorative aspect to them).
Bake at 350*C for 10-15 minutes

We usually do a double recipe, because they go so fast. After they’re done, eat them fresh, or keep them in the fridge.

Someday I will get a picture to post.

Other updates:

– Had my last day at work yesterday, I will miss that place. It was one of the best jobs I’ve had, and I will miss the people the most.. If you live in Prince George, you really should go to the Hospice Resale Shop, tax free, super duper people, and awesome craft supplies. Also they are having a dollar sale on clothing for the month of July.. so you better head down there. It’s for a good cause also.

– Going to be with my love again on Friday!! I’m so excited!! I haven’t seen him in over a month 😦  New apartment, new city, new everything… it’s exhilarating and scary and awesome all at once.

– Getting a hair cut tomorrow!! not anything drastic.. just a trim, but I’m still excited.

Impending summer

excuse the yucky look on my face

Well you’d hope that summer would already be up and running, but here in nothern BC it has only been for maybe a month…. maybe.
I got a new dress! It fits like a dream
In actual news: I may be moving to vancouver in the very near future!!! Will has applied at one of the restaurants on the waterfront and tonight he’s doing a trial shift to see if they want him and where he’d fit in the kitchen. If he gets it then they’ll be giving him a full- time postion.  He’s been checking out apartments too.
I’m excited! And also worried because of the wedding and how to be able to move down and still do all that stuff.. i’m trying not to worry bout it too much because we’ll figure it out in the next few days.
I mostly just miss him… I want to be with him while all these exciting things are happening.

Pictures! and Food! and Crochet! oh my

Well there’s quite a bit that’s been in the works for me. but first! pictures of a fancy coconut curry with spicy shrimp and shitake mushrooms. Yum Yum Yum!

it was spicy but not too spicy, super delicious smooth heavenly flavor

marinating the shrimp, which go on top of the soup afterwards

then sautee the shrimp and have some limes with cracked pepper on just one side for fancy plating’s sake

TA DA!! I love my man! I eat very well.

So to interrupt the pictures, we may be moving down to Vancouver! so exciting! Will is going down at the beginning of next month to go applying and job hunting, and if he gets one, then he’ll do a little apartment searching and I’ll hand in my notice at work. Then when we have an apartment and all the fancy stuff taken care of, I’m going to rent a u-haul and hit the road!! I asked one of my friends if she’d come with me so I’m not just a lone driver, and as long as she can get her pets taken care of for a few days she said it’d be good!! I really am positive things will work out. When we move down I’ll just handle wedding plans via email, and hopefully get to school in the Spring, since it’s a bit late for trying out for the fall semester. Not to mention, I don’t want to worry about school AND a wedding all at once. I think I’ll like the little bit of time to organize things and properly organize a new apartment.

On the craft front: I have a new favorite crochet stitch.

BEHOLD!! the tunisian smocked stitch!!  ( sorry for the crappy picture quality.. but it’s amazing)

it’s stretchy and pretty and feels so nice. In my experience with tunisian/afghan stitches, they seem to be very bulky thick stitches, moreso than regular crochet stitches.. but since the tunisian purl stitch carries a bit of the thread through the front of the work, it spreads the bulk a little more evenly. It looks far fancier than it actually is, and it feels stretchy like I could comfortably wear it as a shirt or something. There aren’t really a lot of stitches I can envision as a super comfortable loungy shirt or sweater.

 pretty picture of my wip

And yes, I did start a little knitting.. nothing fancy, just trying out stitches because I decided I don’t want to limit what I can do with yarn. I don’t know why, but because I see crochet as somewhat of an “underdog” I began to dislike knitting a lot. I still think that more can be done with crochet, but I’m going to try to respect and learn from the techniques knitters use so that I can develop my crocheting skills and combine them into marvelous projects.

Will left on his 3-week long work experience to Vancouver today.. he’s starting tomorrow at the PanPacific. It was so sad at the airport, I couldn’t cry because his dad was there and it would have been really awkward, cause I had to drive back with him.. 😦 I miss him so much already.. there’s almost no point in coming home ever because he’s the reason I look forward to bedtime and after work and hanging out at home in general. Without him it’s so empty and lonely.

Well my sister’s birthday is today, so I made her a bag.. wish I had an iron so it wouldn’t be so collapsed and sad looking, but i did fairly well for not having sewn anything in a long time. Dug into my fabric stash and found this awesome dark green brocade-type fabric. lined it with this black and white psychedelic polka dot fabric, and the handles are chain crocheted thick felted green wool yarn. it looks pretty snazzy, but it’s a little small. It’ll be good for bringing around a wallet and a couple other things around.
